A couple of months ago I did something unusual: I donated a cameo on this strip to be auctioned off for the benefit of the Chicago Friends School. One of my best friends sends her older son there, and I went to Quaker school myself as a kid, so I was happy to do it.

The family that bought the cameo asked me to put their adorable son Luke in the comic as a cameo, and they sent me some pictures for reference, including one where he was reading Jeff Smith’s Bone. WELL. I liked this kid already. So I decided to make that moment in my head the basis for the cameo comic.

Meanwhile, if you haven’t read Bone, golly, why not? You should get on that.
